Volunteer Opportunities
Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT)

The City is looking for a minimum of 10 Oakland residents to train as Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members.  The classes are about a 16 hour commitment, that can either split it into 1 evening a week for 2 hours or 2 full Saturdays. The choice will be up to the group.

CERT is a training program that allows civilians and government employees to take the necessary steps in an emergency to save lives. During emergencies citizens can manage utilities and put out small fires; treat the medical emergencies by opening airways, controlling bleeding, and treating for shock; provide basic medical aid; search for and rescue victims safely; and organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers to be effective. CERTs are not intended to replace a community's response capability, but rather, to serve as an important supplement to it during emergencies when government response capabilities are spread thin.

What is Pittsburgh Snow Angels?
Snow covered sidewalks can be hazardous for everyone. Pittsburgh Snow Angels is a program that helps minimize the hardships of winter by pairing volunteers with elderly or disabled residents to assist with snow removal.

Along with fostering stronger community relationships and relieving some of the stress that comes from a snow storm, Snow Angels makes our sidewalks safer for those who continue to serve despite the winter weather – like postal service workers, firemen, and police officers.

Join the Rotary Clubs of Bethel-St. Clair and Northern Allegheny, Pittsburgh Police, and Holy Assumption of St. Mary Orthodox Church this Thanksgiving for the annual “Get Stuffed with Love” event.

Help those in need in the community by cooking, assembling, and delivering food to feed the hungry on Thanksgiving Day. This year, we expect to feed approximately 3,500 residents in the City of Pittsburgh. Donations can be made up to Thanksgiving day, but donations are always accepted so even after Thanksgiving it would still go towards the program.

In need of a meal on Thanksgiving?
Contact your Community Resource Officer in the Zone in which you live.
Zone 4 — 412-422-6559: Officers Shannon Leshen, Tom Pauley & Dave Shifren

Dinner requests should be made by Friday, November 18th so they have an idea on the number of requests in time for preparation and packaging of the meals.
