Just Eat It explores the topic of why we throw nearly 50% of all food into the trash. Join us to view this documentary, which brings farmers, retailers, inspiring organizations, and consumers to the table in a cinematic story that is both educational and entertaining. Snacks will be provided, and there will be plenty of time for conversation.

2015 City of Pittsburgh Christmas Tree Recycling
Take Your Tree to one of the following City Drop­ Off Locations Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to have
it composted.
  
January Only:
  • Strip District – Environmental Services Lot, 3001 Railroad Street (next to recycling drop­off)
Year Round:
  • East End, 2nd Division of Public Works, North Dallas Ave at Hamilton Ave
  • Hazelwood, 3rd Division of Public Works, Melanchton Ave. off 5200 block of 2nd Ave
  • West End, 5th Division of Public Works, 1330 Hassler St. off Hershel & Steuben (near Herschel Park)
Remove all ornaments, lights and stands.
No trees in plastic bags or netting will be accepted.

500 Residents of Uptown and Oakland will receive free energy-saving tools and tips through participation in a one-year energy saving challenge
 
Be an Energy Coach
 
Who: Limited to 10 residents of Oakland and Uptown – no one knows the neighborhood like you do – your knowledge and network are key to making this program a success.
 
What: Participate in about 10 free training and planning sessions to help recruit and roll out the program; organize 12 monthly distributions of information on tips and tools; gather feedback from program participants 
 
When: About 20 hours/month for the span of this program (Jan 2016 – Apr 2017)

Junction Hollow Transit Connector Meeting Monday Night 12/7 6:30pm, 300 Saline St

There is a meeting regarding the potential transit connector from ALMONO site through Junction Hollow.  It is 6:30 pm Monday, Dec 7, at the International Union Of Operating Engineers building in lower Greenfield, 300 Saline Street, near Big Jim’s Restaurant.

Yard Debris Special Collection – Fall 2015 – Sat 11/14

The City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Public Works Bureau of Environmental Services will be collecting leaf and yard debris from all residents in a special curbside collection on Saturday, November 14.
 
Residents should place yard debris at normal collection sites before 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 14. All yard debris materials will be collected by city refuse and recycling crews and composted on Saturday November 14.
 
Bag Leaves for Collection: Residents must bag leaves in paper bags only and place them out at normal refuse collection sites. Bags should NOT exceed 35 pounds. Leaves in plastic bags will NOT be accepted. Paper yard debris bags can be purchased at local hardware or department stores.
 
Tree Branches and Bushes: Cut, bundle and tie branches and bushes in lengths not exceeding 5 ft. in length. Tree branch diameter should not exceed four (4”) inches.
 
Please Note: Yard debris NOT meeting the collection guidelines will be left at the curb. Yard waste should not contain dirt, rocks, stones, cement, metal, wire, glass or plastic.

Grassroots Green Homes Program Recruiting Participants in Oakland

Announcing an energy and cost saving program – called Grassroots Green Homes – that Conservation Consultants, Inc. are trying to get off the ground in the neighborhoods of Uptown and Oakland.  This program will provide free energy saving tools and tips to participants – to help residents save money on their electricity and heating bills and reduce their environmental impact.

​They​

 are currently trying to get the word out about this program and generate interest in order to recruit community liaisons (Energy Coaches).  These Energy Coaches will help sign up participants for the program and be their point of contact throughout the year-long program.  

​They​

aim to have ten Energy Coaches who will receive training, support materials, and a small stipend to help enable and encourage energy savings for the 500 participants in the Grassroots Green Homes program.  More information is in the attached flyer.

    • The Allegheny County Department of Parks is again offering its Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program this holiday season. Residents of the county can drop off their Christmas trees beginning today, Friday, December 26, 2014 through Saturday, January 17, 2015 at all nine regional parks during regular hours of operation (dawn to dusk).

Thanks to the Western PA Conservancy and Phipps Conservatory, the Oakland Green Team has free daffodil bulbs to beautify Oakland neighborhoods.
Planting sites should be viewable to the public.
