In the new exhibit Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs, rare fossils, life-size models, and hands-on interactives bring these ancient animals to life.

They flew with their fingers. They walked on their wings. Some were gigantic, while others could fit in the palm of a hand. Millions of years ago, the skies were ruled by pterosaurs, the first animals with backbones to fly under their own power

PITTSBURGH CITIZEN’S POLICE ACADEMY
Twice a year, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police sponsors an opportunity for members of the community to become closely acquainted with the roles and responsibilities of the Police Bureau.  The Pittsburgh Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA) brings the police and the community close together in a setting that offers a sample of police training to each/
Participants receive three hours of training one evening each week for 15 weeks in many of the varied functions of law enforcement.  They experience some of the highlights of police training and are exposed to the operations of the police bureau.  Participants are taught the basics of criminal law, search and seizure, patrol tactics, firearms and many other subjects.  They learn about the processing of a crime scene, how police canines are used, and are exposed to many of the specialty police units. CPA participants meet and talk with many of the street officers as well as the command staff and training staff that serves them.  All this takes place in a safe and entertaining training environment.
Instructors are law enforcement professionals who teach both veteran and recruit police officers.  Citizens leave this training with a greater understanding of the police mission and with an increased ability to see how the police serve the community.

If you require special accommodations, please contact ADA Coordinator Richard Meritzer: 412-255-2102richard.meritzer@pittsburghpa.gov

Meeting Format:

The meetings’ workshop format will allow residents to arrive at any time during the 4 pm to 7 pm timeframe and to rotate through three 20-minute workshops. The three concurrent sessions will present and discuss preliminary plan recommendations on:Public Art Policies; the Urban Design Manual; and Neighborhood Visions. The session on neighborhood visions will provide a list of visions from existing community plans, of which attendees may offer feedback and suggestions. Within the public art session, initial best practices and suggested policy recommendations will presented and discussed, and in the third concurrent session, preliminary recommendations for the urban design manual, including recommendations on development that captures neighborhood character, will be presented.

Residents will provide feedback on this current planning work, that will set the framework for the draft ARTPGH and DESIGNPGH plan documents. ARTPGH andDESIGNPGH will set policies and tools to guide the City in the areas of public art and urban design for the next 25 years. The recommended policies and findings will be presented for public feedback later this year.

Also, you may have heard that TALKPGH is coming your way! TALKPGH is the mobile outreach component of ARTPGH and DESIGNPGH. It is an artist-led project that will travel to each of the 90 neighborhoods and interview residents relevant to these plans. Check it out here!

ARTPGH is developing a strategy for the City to engage local, regional and national artists, facilitate care for its extensive art collection, and involve artists in public space, facility and infrastructure design. DESIGNPGH is examining existing types of urban design and devise a plan with set guidelines that will inform future developers about the quality and character of design that is expected and feasible in our neighborhoods.

The public art and urban design plans are heavily dependent on public participation and are estimated to be completed over the next 9 months. There will be ongoing opportunities and subsequent public meetings for the public to become involved. Please visit planpgh.com to sign up for email updates related to ARTPGH,DESIGNPGH and other components of PLANPGH.

Oakland Career Center Open House

Warning: Undefined variable $output in /home2/oakcliff/public_html/wp-content/themes/mw-small-Oakcliffe/functions.php on line 103

OPDC will celebrate the grand opening of our new Career Center on Wednesday, March 13that 4pm. OPDC secured a long-term lease agreement with the City of Pittsburgh last summer, renovated the building, and relocated our JobLinks and School 2 Career (S2C) programs into it in early fall.

OPDCCareerCenter

We’ll open the renovated space for tours, refreshments, and the dedication of the JoAnn Fountain Community Room, named in memory of one of Oakland’s most dedicated residents.

The building has sat as an abandoned blight on the community for many years. In reviving the building, OPDC has revitalized an entire block and provided an enhanced facility for our JobLinks and School 2 Career clients.

For JobLinks, the new building’s meeting space people will accommodate job fairs, events for area employers, and for the first time, the ability to offer our Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) classroom trainings on site. For S2C, the move signifies the first dedicated space to call their own since the program began in 1996; it also accommodates recent enrollment increases.

OPDC mobilized approximately 100 volunteers to complete the renovations. Residents and students helped clear out old appliances, scrap metal, and over 60 bags of recycling and 40 bags of garbage from the building. Thanks to Construction Junction for recycling and reusing many of these items!

When we completed the renovation, we partnered with TreeVitalize to plant eight new trees along both sides of the building.

The building is currently a polling location for many Oakland residents; OPDC will continue to make the space available for polling on election days.

Check out the before and after pictures of the building here.
